KAU (formerly KAU trio.) is an instrumental project based in Brussels. Representing various European backgrounds, their coming-together is in the spirit of the city they grew up in. Taking inspiration from jazz, they create a head-bobbing atmosphere using broken beats and heavy grooves while leaving space for improvisation.
Since 2020 and the start of their joint project, the group has continuously experimented and explored the edges of jazz, groove, and dance music to distill their distinctive sound. From the resolutely hip-hop "Beat Tape Vol 1" to the more nu-jazz oriented EP "II" and their latest EP "III" focused on electro effects and textures, the trio constantly seeks to surprise themselves by jamming and improvising for hours until they find the sound that makes them roar. Like mad scientists, they fumble around and always end up finding the formula that hits the mark: a captivating bass line, a tight drum groove, or a simple catchy synth melody—everything is material to develop into a track.
Unknown Waveforms is the forthcoming album from Belgian trio KAU, set for release on October 10, 2025. Marking an evolution since their 2023 release The Cycle Repeats, this new record captures a more personal, immediate, and unfiltered version of the band’s sound. In an increasingly digital world, KAU takes a different route, with an album rooted in human connection, live energy, and creative spontaneity. Here, the trio reflect their take on instrumental music, drawing heavily from jazz, hip hop, and electronic influences.
